DON’T LIVE A LIE
We are all motivated by a basic desire to feed ourselves, find a decent home to live in and to have a life that includes love and friendship and something interesting to do during the daylight hours. Everything else is a bonus.
When we lose our job or we have a period of ill-health, our motivating forces are thrown into sharp relief. It only takes a day of extreme pain to remind us that our health is more important than our smartphone. It only takes a redundancy situation to remind us that our partner really does love us and is far more important than all the hours we spent typing up meeting notes, instead of enjoying the company of our companions.
If our motivation is misguided, we will cause ourselves real heartache and will begin to lead a double life. This happens where we tell our friends and colleagues that we’re having a great time, when we secretly we wish to be somewhere else, doing something completely different. However, because we’ve told everyone how brilliant our life is, we have to stick with the lie or risk sounding like a fool. We are trapped, until we can finally find the courage to share the problems we are facing, or we burn out and our career engine seizes, leaving us to plummet and crash to the ground.
If you’re living a lie then be kind to yourself – find a confidential counsellor to talk to and begin to unravel the strings that bind you to a miserable present.
